Hyderabad and surrounding urban districts are under growing groundwater stress, with nearly 70% of annual groundwater resources already extracted. The 2025-26 IN-GRES assessment says the Core Urban Region, covering Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri, has drawn around 48,000 hectare-metres, while eight areas over-exploit groundwater and seven are critical.
