Australia removed rabbits from Cabbage Tree Island in 1997, easing pressure on Gould’s petrel habitat and nesting success. By 2000, the island supported more than 800 breeding pairs, and annual chicks topped 400. Conservationists also started a second breeding colony on Boondelbah Island.
