The CPI urged the Union and state governments to act after essential food prices rose sharply across the country, especially in southern states, including Tamil Nadu. Party state secretary M Veerapandian said some rice varieties, including ponni, had climbed by up to 50%, while premium rice sold for Rs 90 per kg.
